- Caregiver Support
CAREconnect
Problem Statement
Caregivers of persons with disabilities face lifelong caregiving demands and often struggle to navigate support services, especially during key transition points such as diagnosis, schooling, graduation, employment, ageing and respite needs. As existing support is often reactive and crisis-driven, there is a need for a more pre-emptive and holistic caregiver support model that strengthens caregiver resilience, peer support, care-planning capacity and community connections, ultimately improving the quality of life of persons with disabilities.
Solution
CaringSG’s CAREconnect programme provides holistic caregiver support through the creation of a caregiver database, organisation of activities, and training of grassroots and community volunteers.
The programme consists of the following components:
- CaringSG Alliance Network (CAN): A national digital caregiver network consisting of an alliance of more than 21 disability-specific support groups;
- CAREconnect events: Inclusive national and neighbourhood-based events for caregivers and persons with disabilities; and
- CAREkaki programme: A grassroots and community volunteer training and collaboration programme that enables volunteers to identify and approach persons with disabilities and their families to provide relevant support, organise accessible community events, and champion future inclusive initiatives.
These provide natural touchpoints for caregivers and build resources within the community.
Outcomes
The programme aims to:
- Empower caregivers and persons with disabilities to make better and more informed decisions through access to evidence-based knowledge;
- Improve utilisation of existing caregiver services by directing caregivers to mainstream and community service providers, leading to better caregiving outcomes; and
- Engage and support caregivers and persons with disabilities in daily community living and neighbourhood events.
